4-time world champion Tim Gajser leads the MXGP standings as the racers hit the course at Sardegna on Sunday

With Jorge Prado, who won the last two MCGP motocross world championships, now racing on the American circuit, four-time world champion Tim Gajser has stepped into the void as he looks to return to the top of the podium again on Sunday at the Sardegna, Italy. Gajser has swept the last two rounds of the championship, winning in Spain and France on consecutive weekends last month after Maxime Renaux won the season opener in Argentina. Gajser, a Slovenian riding for Honda, comes to Italy with a 29-point lead over Kawasaki rider Romain Febvre of France.

Gajser won his first world championship in MXGP in 2016 and added consecutive titles in 2019-20 and a fourth crown in 2022. He was runner-up in the standings to Prado last year. After a pair of third-place finishes in Argentina, Gajser has won four straight races. Febvre, with a pair of second-place rides in France, trails Gajser 167-138 in the early-season standings.

Renaux is third, 46 points behind, while Lucas Coenen and Glenn Coldenhoff are tied for fourth with a 60-point gap. Gajser is the only rider with podium finishes in all six races this season.

Riders are awarded points for each race, with 25 to the winner, 22 to second place and 20 to third. Fourth place earns 18 points and fifth place gets 16, with the points decreasing incrementally from there down to a single point for a 20th-place ride.
