No. 2 visits No. 1 as the top two teams in the national high school football polls square off in Santa Ana, California

Bishop Gorman (2-0) is a Nevada high school football powerhouse, with three straight state Class 5A championships and a 27-game winning streak dating back to the last time they played Southern California dynasty Mater Dei (1-0). On Friday night, the Gaels head to Santa Ana, California, to take on the Monarchs in a matchup of the top-ranked teams in the nation. Mater Dei entered the season ranked No. 1, coming off a CIF Southern Section open division championship and with seven straight wins since a regular-season loss last October to St. John Bosco (ranked No. 3 in the U.S.).

Both teams come off bye weeks. Bishop Gorman last played on Aug. 24, traveling across the country to beat preseason-No. 21 St. Thomas Aquinas 29-21 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in a game delayed because of lightning. Melvin Spicer IV threw two touchdown passes, one to highly touted receiver Derek Meadows, an LSU commit.

The Gaels have four players in the ESPN 300 for this year’s recruiting class, including a trio of offensive linemen in guard S.J. Aloafaituli (No. 10, committed to Miami), tackle Douglas Utu (No. 13, Tennessee) and center Alai Kalaniuvalu (No. 103, Oregon), as well as Meadows (No. 187).

Mater Dei opened its season with a 42-25 homefield victory over Centennial from Corona, California, on Aug. 22. The Monarchs broke open a close game in the second half, getting 122 rushing yards and a touchdown from Jordon Davison and two TD passes from Ashton Beierly. Tomuhini Topui scored on a punt return as well.

Six Mater Dei players dot the ESPN 300, including linebacker Nasir Wyatt (No. 88, committed to Oregon), cornerback Daryus Dixson (No. 90, Penn State), Davison (No. 100, Oregon), wide receiver Marcus Harris (No. 125, Oklahoma), cornerback Chuck McDonald III (No. 131, Alabama) and linebacker Abduall Sanders Jr. (No. 161, Alabama).
