Parkersburg looks for revenge after last seasons opener, when they travel to take on Morgantown on Thursday.

Even though it is a non-conference matchup, it will be a West Virginia state rivalry showdown when Parkersburg travels to take on Morgantown on Thursday night to start the season. These two are very familiar with one another since they faced off against one another to start the 2024 campaign. Morgantown won that season opener in a 24-13 final that was close until the fourth quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter, and Morgantown jumped out to a 10-3 lead before the half. Parkersburg outscored its opponent in the third but were held scoreless in the fourth to drop the opener. Morgantown should be the favorite today, beyond just being the hometeam. The Mohigans are ranked No. 14 in West Virginia, while the Big Reds are ranked 32nd in the state. Either way, this in-state rivalry showdown will be a great way to kick off the season.

Parkersburg is looking to build on a 4-7 record in 2024 where the Big Reds finished, with a 3-4 mark in the region. That was good enough for the sixth spot in the Mountain State Football standings. Parkersburg would win their next game 37-0 against South Charleston on the road, but then the school would drop its next two games. The Big Reds did not win consecutive games last season, so stringing some together this year would be a promising improvement.

Morgantown had a pretty good season last year, finishing with an 8-4 record. The Mohigans finished third in the Two Rivers region with a 2-1 record. Morgantown won four of its first five games before having a mid season slump. They would finish the rest of the way, winning another four of five. Can the Mohigans build on their momentum from last season?
