Columbus is coming off a huge semi-finals win when it takes on Malakoff in the UIL 3A Texas State Championship Thursday night.

Malakoff looks to stay undefeated on the season when they face off against Columbus in this Texas high school UIL Conference 3A DI Championship on Thursday. These two will face off in Jerry World aka AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX for this championship. On paper, this should be a very close matchup considering that Malakoff has a 15-0 record and is averaging 47.8 points per game and Columbus is 14-1 and is averaging more with 52.7 ppg. Both teams average many more points in the first half and fall off considerably in the second. The key to this championship game is who will get off to a quicker start.

Malakoff may have the better record but it is Columbus who is coming off an incredibly dominant game in the semifinals to make it to the championship round. The Cardinals beat Edna by a 49-6 final last Thursday. Columbus only scored one touchdown in the second half and still won in a landslide. The Cardinals got up 42-0 before Edna was able to score. The Cardinals will likely have to keep their foot on the gas in the second half though if they are going to walk away with this title. Columbus’ only loss this season came in overtime and was by one point against Hitchcock. The Cardinals are more than capable of walking away with this championship.

Unlike most of its season, Malakoff got off to a very slow start in the semifinals but were able to keep its undefeated campaign rolling beating Paradise last week 27-19. The Tigers led the Panthers 7-6 after the first quarter but they weren’t able to score again until the fourth quarter. Fortunately for Malakoff, it was able to wake up and put up 20 to pull off the comeback to make the championship game. The Tigers likely won’t be able to afford getting off to a slow start against the Cardinals considering how prolific the Columbus offense is. The Tigers are undefeated for a reason. Can Malakoff regain its offensive form in time to win this UIL Texas State Championship?
