Uintah (3-0) opens its 4A Region 8 schedule on Thursday night when it heads to Spanish Fork (2-1) on Thursday night. The unbeaten Utes, located in Vernal, Utah, have already exceeded last season’s total of two wins in the program’s second season back at the 4A level. The Dons play their third consecutive home game this week and come off a victory.

On Friday night, Uintah pulled away from Union in the second half for a 34-14 victory in the annual Basin Bowl clash between the two rivals from the Uintah Basin towns of Vernal and Roosevelt. Dace O’Bagy scored on runs of 40 and 71 yards in the second half while JD Pickup had a touchdown pass and scored on the ground as well.

Senior quarterback Mckay Smith was nearly flawless in Spanish Fork’s 47-28 win over visiting Sky View on Friday, finishing 23-of-25 for 309 yards with three touchdowns. Senior Brock Jacobson hauled in 12 of those passes for 160 yards and two scores while senior Kaden Vest powered the ground game with 201 yards on 32 carries and two scores. The Dons outgained the Bobcats 620-369 in the win.

Utah changed its state tournament in 2020, allowing every school in the state to compete. Last season, Uintah, at 2-8 in the regular season, was seeded 24th of the 24 teams in the state 4A tournament and lost 44-7 at Salem Hills in the first round. Spanish Fork, the No. 16 seed at 3-6, dropped a 48-33 decision to visiting Bear River in the opening round.

Uintah won a Class 3A state championship in 1994. The Dons advanced to the 3A championship game in 2012, losing to Dixie.
