Fort Cherry returns to Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh to defend its WPIAL Class 1A title against Clairton

Fort Cherry (13-0) looks to repeat as WPIAL Class 1A champions on Saturday when they take on Clairton (13-0) at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. The Rangers are led by junior quarterback Matt Sieg, an ESPN 300 recruit who committed to Penn State earlier this month. Fort Cherry won its first WPIAL title last year after losses in the final in both 1997 and 2001. The Bears, on the other hand, is looking for its 15th WPIAL championship and its first since 2019. Clairton lost in the 2020 championship game.

Sieg put on a show on Nov. 14, piling up 222 yards and six touchdowns on the ground while also throwing for 102 yards as the Rangers hammered Jeannette 49-14. Sieg joined former NFL player Terrelle Pryor as the only players in WPIAL history with more than 4,000 passing and rushing yards in their career.

The Bears come off their third straight shutout of the playoffs after eliminating Bishop Canavin on Nov. 15 with a 24-0 victory. Michael Ruffub racked up 113 yards on just four carries while Drahcir Jones and Deon Pomphey also scored rushing touchdowns. Clairton has allowed just 21 points all season and also has the most potent scoring offense in the WPIAL, averaging 51.6 points per game.

Quarterback Jeff Thompson III has 1,872 yards and 26 touchdowns with just three interceptions while Jones has piled up 1,362 rushing yards on just 116 carries and scored 23 touchdowns. Six different receivers have caught scoring passes for the Bears while freshman Brandon Murphy Jr. leads the defense with nine sacks.
