After great performances in the semis from both schools, Wheeling Central Catholic and Clay-Battelle battle in the Class A state championship.

Clay-Battelle goes for its 13th win in a row, when they battle against Wheeling Central Catholic for the WVSSAC Class A State Championship on Friday. Clay-Battelle is 12-1 overall this season, and the Cee-Bees’ only loss this season came in the opener. Clay-Battelle was shaking off the rust from the offseason, losing 22-16 to Cameron in one of just two conference matchups this season. It was an uncharacteristically low scoring game for the Cee-Bees who have been dominant on offense for much of this season. This is the first time this season that Clay-Battelle and Wheeling Central Catholic will face off against one another this season. The Maroon Knights are 9-2 overall this season, and are 2-0 in conference matchups. Wheeling Central Catholic has been on the wrong side of two blowouts this year, but the Maroon Knights have been dominating lately going for their sixth win in a row tonight. Can Wheeling Central Catholic disrupt Clay-Battelle’s run?

Wheeling Central Catholic is coming off a 43-20 win over Pendleton County in the semifinals. WCCHS shutout Pendleton County in a pivotal fourth quarter. The Maroon Knights led 29-20 after the third quarter, in a game that still could have gone either way. WCCHS outscored its opponent 14-0 in the fourth. The Maroon Knights had senior running back Kade Koroneos to thank for the win. He rushed for an astonishing 278 yards, for 10.3 yards per carry. Koroneos reached the end zone five times. If he can sustain that rushing success, Wheeling Central Catholic has a real shot at the state title.

Clay-Battelle is coming off a closer matchup against Cameron, winning 24-12 in the semifinals. The Cee-Bees’ defense came up clutch forcing the Cameron QB to throw three interceptions. Junior QB for Clay-Battelle, Corey Coen was limited to just two completions for 45 yards passing on the day. But Coen made up for it with his legs rushing for two touchdowns and 123 yards. Sophomore running back Caleb Hall backed him up reaching the century mark on the ground. If you are a fan of a great rushing attack, this state championship is for you.
