Maroa-Forsyth returns to the Illinois 2A championship game, looking to win it this time around when it takes on Wilmington on Friday.

The Maroa-Forsyth Trojans (11-2) are back in the Illinois High School Association 2A championship game for the second straight season, looking to take the final step after a loss in last season’s title game. On Friday afternoon at Illinois State’s Hancock Stadium in Normal, the Trojans take on the Wilmington Wildcats (12-1), who returned to the 2A ranks this season after playing at the 3A level in 2024. The Wildcats won the 2A championship in 2023 while Maroa-Forsyth’s last state crown came in 2012, with five losses in the championship game since.

Wilmington powered to a 41-0 semifinal victory over El Paso-Gridley on Saturday, rolling up 467 yards on 41 carries in a game that was played with a running clock for the entire second half. Hunter Kaitschuck ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries, Ryan Kettman posted 129 yards and two scores with eight attempts, Billy Moore rolled to 86 yards on three carries and Nate Cupples scored a touchdown. The Wildcats’ running game has been so dominant this season, they have attempted only four passes all season.

Ryne Sheppard accounted for three touchdowns in the Trojans’ 28-6 semifinal win over Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond on Saturday for their fifth straight win. Sheppard has thrown for 3,111 yards and 40 touchdowns with just one interception while also running for 711 yards and 20 scores. Zach Smith is the target for Sheppard with 63 receptions, 1,284 yards and 21 TDs.

The Wildcats have been dominant in the playoffs, outscoring four opponents by a combined 202-15, while Maroa-Forsyth’s run includes four victories by a margin of 143-38. Wilmington has won 12 straight since a 27-20 loss at Morris, a 4A program, in its opener.
