McLaren’s Lando Norris puts on a clinic in qualifying to start from the pole for Sunday’s Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix

After a strong run in the final practice session on Saturday, Lando Norris of McLaren finished the job in qualifying with the most dominant run of the 2025 Formula 1 season, claiming the pole for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. Norris finished more than a half-second clear of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, with the 0.521-second gap the largest qualifying margin of the season thus far. Points leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren grabbed the third spot on the grid while the 2024 winner at Spielberg, Mercedes’ George Russell, qualified fifth.

Red Bull Ring originally opened in 1969 and re-opened in 2011, with Formula 1 returning to the circuit in 2014. The 2.683-mile circuit was redesigned in 2016 and includes 10 turns. The first half of the short course rewards power on three straights separated by two uphill right turns, but the course turns into a precision turning test on the downhill.

Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari will start fourth on the grid, with the rest of the top 10 including Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls, Red Bull Racing’s four-time defending world champion Max Verstappen, Gabriel Bortoleto of Kick Sauber, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Verstappen has won a record four times on the course, with Hamilton, Leclerc and Russell also boasting top-of-the-podium finishes.

Piastri comes to Spielberg with a 22-point lead over teammate Norris, with Verstappen 43 points back and Russell trailing by 62 points. Leclerc is the only other driver to accumulate more than 100 points so far this season, 94 behind Piastri’s total of 198.
