McLaren’s Oscar Piastri takes the pole by a whisker over George Russell of Mercedes for Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri of McLaren was able to slip into the pole position on Saturday and will lead the field into Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix after just edging Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for the top spot. Sunday’s race at Bahrain International Circuit is the fourth of the new Formula 1 season that has seen three different drivers win the first three events. Piastri won in China last month while McLaren teammate Lando Norris took the season opener in Australia and four-time defending world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull drove to the top of the podium last weekend in Japan. The McLaren duo has each hit the podium in all three starts, the only drivers to do so.

The Bahrain International Circuit opened in March 2004, 3.363 miles around with 15 turns since the Grand Prix Circuit was revised in 2005. Expect decent amounts of overtaking amidst the wind under the floodlights. The most challenging point on the track is a tight, downhill Turn 10 that goes off-camber.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly will join Norris on Row 3. Verstappen qualified just seventh alongside Carlos Sainz of Williams, with Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari and Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull rounding out the top 10. Norris comes to Bahrain with a one-point lead over Verstappen in the standings, with Piastri 13 points behind, Russell trailing by 17 and Antonelli 32 points back.

Hamilton is a five-time winner on the Bahrain course, with his last top-of-the-podium finish coming in 2021. Verstappen has won each of the last two years and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has won on the course three times.
