McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finish 1-2 in qualifying for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen’s dominant win in Saturday’s Sprint

Lando Norris clipped McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in qualifying on Saturday, with his margin of 0.085 seconds enough to claim the pole position for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, Belgium. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari grabbed the third spot ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who cruised to a dominant victory in Saturday’s Sprint. Sunday marks the 81st running of the Belgian Grand Prix, which dates to 1925 and has been held annually since 2007. Lewis Hamilton, who won here last year for Mercedes, will start 16th in his first run at Spa for Ferrari.

Since its last reconfiguration in 2006, Spa is a 4.352-mile layout with 19 turns, where Sergio Pérez set the course record in 2024 with a lap of 1:44.701. It is one of the most popular circuits among F1 drivers with its mix of long straights and fast corners that allow them to push the cars to the edge — provided the surface is dry. The large track can lead to races where it’s raining on one part of the course and dry on others.

Verstappen’s win in the Sprint on Saturday only allowed him to pick up one point in the driver’s standings on leader Piastri. The Australian leads teammate Norris by nine points in the race for the championship while four-time defending world champ Verstappen is 68 points back. George Russell of Mercedes is fourth with a 94-point gap and Leclerc stands fifth, 117 points behind.

Alexander Albon of Williams and Russell are on the third row of the grid, with Red Bull Racing’s Yuki Tsunoda and Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls qualifying seventh and eighth. Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto round out the top 10 on the grid.
