George Russell of Mercedes takes the pole position into Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Max Verstappen

George Russell of Mercedes was the lone driver in qualifying to post a sub-1:11 lap on Saturday and claimed the pole position for Sunday’s Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Russell’s run in the final moments of the third qualifying session clipped four-time defending world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing by 0.160 seconds to claim the first position, with points leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren set to begin from the third spot. Verstappen has won the last three races at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.

The Canadian Grand Prix dates to 1967 as a sanctioned F1 race and has been run at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve since 1978. It was not on the F1 schedule in 1975, 1987 and 2009 and was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The circuit is one of the drivers’ favorites, a fast, low-downforce run that is quick and flowing out of the corners. It is a 2.71-mile course with 14 turns since a redesign of the track in 2002.

The rest of the top 10 starters include Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes in fourth, followed by Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, McLaren’s Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, Williams’ Alexander Albon and Franco Colapinto of Alpine. Racing Bulls Honda’s Isack Hadjar dropped from ninth to 12th due to a penalty for impeding, while Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull Racing was sent from 11th to 21st for a red-flag infringement during the third practice session on Saturday.

Hamilton shares the record of seven Canadian Grand Prix victories with Michael Schumacher while Verstappen is the only other active driver with multiple wins with his run of three straight. Piastri comes to Montreal with a 10-point lead over teammate Norris, with Verstappen 49 points behind, Russell trailing by 75 points and Leclerc facing a 92-point deficit.
