McLaren’s tandem of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris land at the front of the grid for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix.

The battle atop the Formula 1 standings continues on Sunday as McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris will start 1-2 in the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort in Zandvoort, Netherlands. The tandem is 1-2 in the world championship standings, with Piastri arriving at Zandvoort with a nine-point edge over Norris at the end of F1’s summer break. Four-time defending world champion Max Verstappen gave the home crowd something to cheer about by qualifying third but is 97 points behind Piastri with 10 races remaining in the season.

After Norris set the pace early in Q3, Piastri turned a lap of 1:08.662 late in the session to snatch the pole position from his teammate by a scant 0.012 seconds. Verstappen will be joined on the second row by Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls, whose fourth-place qualifying run is a career-best. Mercedes’ George Russell and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari make up Row 3, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls on the fourth row. Carlos Sainz of Williams and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso round out the top 10 on the grid.

Piastri has 12 podium finishes to go with six race wins in 14 starts this season while Norris has five victories among his 11 podiums. Verstappen has a pair of wins this season and Russell topped the podium in Montreal in June. Norris had three wins in the final four grands prix before the break.

Circuit Zandvoort is a 2.646-mile layout with 14 turns, down from 15 after a 2020 renovation. The course opened in 1948 and Verstappen has a chance to tie him with Jim Clark’s record of four overall victories in 1963-65 and 1967. Norris broke Verstappen’s string of three consecutive wins at Zandvoort last year.
