Points leader Oscar Piastri captures his 3rd pole position of the season at Imola as he chases a 4th straight win on Sunday

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has finished on the podium in five straight races, including three straight victories and four wins overall, and claimed the pole position for Sunday’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola Circuit in northern Italy. Piastri charged past four-time defending Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell at the end of qualifying on Saturday to grab the first spot on the grid. Piastri comes into the race at the course officially named the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari with a 16-point lead over teammate Lando Norris through six races this season.

Piastri clipped Verstappen by 0.034 seconds for P1 on the grid, with Russell another 0.103 seconds back. Norris qualified fourth, with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz of Williams on the third row, followed by Williams’ Alexander Albon and Lance Stroll of Aston Martin. Racing Bulls Honda’s Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine round out the top 10.

The Imola Circuit can best be described as a thrill ride, a fast, counter-clockwise run on a course that opened in 1953, was last renovated in 2008 and welcomed back Formula 1 in 2020. The 3.05-mile track has 19 turns, with Lewis Hamilton — now with Ferrari but then with Mercedes — setting the track record with a 1:15.484 time around the course in 2020.

Verstappen has won the last three Grands Prix at Imola, including last year as well as in 2021 and 2022. The 2023 race was cancelled due to heavy flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region. Piastri finished fourth last year after qualifying second but taking a three-place grid penalty for impeding Haas’ Kevin Magnussen during the qualifying period.
