Max Verstappen starts on the pole again as he looks for a 4th straight Japanese Grand Prix win at Suzuka Circuit

Max Verstappen clipped Lando Norris with a remarkable 1:26.983 final lap in qualifying to earn his fourth straight pole position for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka International Circuit. Red Bull Racing’s lead driver has won the last three races at Suzuka and will start inside of McLaren’s Lando Norris on the grid on Sunday. But many eyes will be on Japan’s native son, Yuki Tsunoda, who qualified just 15th in his debut for Red Bull after he replaced Liam Lawson in the car. Lawson, now racing for Racing Bulls Honda after the switch, finished one spot ahead of Tsunoda in 14th.

The McLaren duo of Norris and Oscar Piastri will start second and third, respectively, after splitting the first two races of the 2025 Formula 1 season. Norris won in Australia and Piastri followed that by topping the podium in China. The Suzuka International Circuit opened in 1962 and has hosted F1 racing off and on since 1987.

The high-speed course features the snaking “S” curves, a pair of Degners and the famed 130R turn. The circuit has been in its current configuration since 2003 and features 18 turns over 3.608 miles. Lewis Hamilton, now with Ferrari, has five wins in Japan, with Verstappen taking the last three and Fernando Alonso, now driving for Aston Martin, topped the podium twice.

The remainder of the top 10 starters include Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fourth, followed by the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in fifth and sixth, respectively. Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls and Hamilton are on Row 4, with Williams’ Alexander Albon and Haas’ Oliver Bearman rounding out the top 10 on the grid.
