McLaren’s Lando Norris makes a last-gasp run to claim the pole position for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Charles Leclerc of Ferrari

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc dominated the practice runs ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, but Lando Norris of McLaren clipped the Monaco native late in qualifying to claim the pole position for Sunday’s race at Circuit de Monaco. Norris finished 0.109 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with points leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren claiming the third spot on the grid. Leclerc is looking for a second straight win on his home course after becoming the first driver from the principality to win at Monaco since 1931 and the first to do so in the Formula 1 era.

The 2025 edition of the Monaco Grand Prix brings with it some additional rules in an attempt to make the race on the tight course more interesting. Drivers will be required to pit twice during the race — one more than at most Formula 1 events — after a red flag on the first lap in 2024 led to a slow event with little overtaking. The top 10 drivers in qualifying finished in the same order after not having to stop after the first lap, with the drivers at the front going very slowly to preserve their tires.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a crash in the final practice session to qualify fourth. The rest of the top 10 on the grid includes Max Verstappen of Red Bull, Racing Bulls Honda’s Isack Hadjar, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, Haas’ Esteban Ocon, Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls Honda and Williams’ Alexander Albon. However, Hamilton was dropped back to the seventh position after receiving a three-spot penalty for impeding Verstappen during qualifying.

Piastri arrives in Monaco with a 13-point lead over Norris in the championship standings, with Verstappen 22 points back. George Russell of Mercedes trails by 47 points with Leclerc fifth, 85 points behind.
