Lando Norris runs to an impressive pole position for Saturday’s Sprint at Lusail International Circuit

McLaren’s Lando Norris, eliminated from championship contention in Las Vegas last weekend, posted the fastest time in all three qualifying sessions on Friday and captured the pole position for the final Sprint of the Formula 1 season ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix. Norris opens from the pole for Saturday’s 19-lap mini-race on the Lusail International Circuit, ahead of George Russell of Mercedes, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari on Row 2. Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who clinched his fourth straight world championship in Las Vegas, will start sixth.

After Verstappen won the first four Sprints of the season, Norris broke through to top the podium at São Paulo earlier this month. Sprints were also held at the Chinese, Miami, Austrian and United States grands prix.

The short race awards points to the top eight finishers on a sliding scale of eight points for the winner down to one point for the eighth-place driver. There is still a battle for second place in the driver standings, with Norris 21 points ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with two races and the Sprint remaining.

The race is tighter for the constructor championship, with McLaren holding a 24-point lead over Ferrari and Red Bull lurking 29 points behind the Ferrari duo. The struggles of Sergio Pérez has held Red Bull back in the standings, as he is just eighth in the standings and qualified 18th for the Sprint on Saturday. Pérez finished second to Verstappen last season, leading to Red Bull romping to the constructor title.
