Max Verstappen shakes off struggles in Sprint to claim a surprise pole position for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix

Max Verstappen of Red Bull, already assured his fourth consecutive Formula 1 championship, bounced back from some struggles during Saturday’s Sprint race to grab the pole position late in qualifying and will start at the front of the grid for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix, his first pole win since June in Austria. Verstappen won last year’s race at the Lusail International Circuit, a 3.367-mile track surrounded by artificial grass to stop the desert sands from encroaching on the surface of the course. George Russell of Mercedes starts on the outside of the first row, with the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri taking both spots on Row 2.

In Saturday’s Sprint, Norris yielded on the final lap to allow teammate Piastri to take the win as McLaren extended its lead for the Constructor title to 30 points over Ferrari, which posted fourth- and fifth-place finishes by Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, respectively, while Russell joined the McLaren duo on the podium, finishing third.

The track was designed as a motorcycle-racing venue and it is a fast, flowing circuit with medium- and high-speed corners predominant. This is the third Formula 1 race on the course since 2021. Leclerc set the record for the fastest race lap with a 1:23.923 turn during last year’s race.

Norris has the inside position to finish second in the driver standings, leading Leclerc by 24 points with two races left on the schedule. The F1 calendar concludes next weekend at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with the 75th anniversary season for Formula 1 opening in mid-March at the Australian Grand Prix.
