Nantes will look to do the unthinkable on Saturday and become the first Ligue 1 team (or any team, for that matter) to beat Lille since September when it makes the trip to the Decathlon Arena. La Maison Jaune has had a woeful few months in France’s top flight and won only one of its last 12 games, losing seven and drawing four in that span to find itself just a point off the relegation places. Lille, on the other hand, sits fourth in the table for the time being and could climb as high as second if it manages to claim a fourth straight win over Nantes.

Since enduring a run of four consecutive losses towards the start of the campaign, Bruno Genesio has shored up Lille’s defense and turned his side into one of the most difficult to defeat in Europe.

The former Lyon and Rennes coach has picked up from where Paulo Fonseca left off last season, and only leader Paris Saint-Germain (still unbeaten) has suffered fewer defeats than Lille (two).

The same really can’t be said for a Nantes line-up whose only away win of the league season so far came all the way back in September.

Left-sided specialist Ismaily came to Lille’s rescue with the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Rouen a fortnight ago, sending his side into the next phase of the Coupe de France as a result:

Nantes delivered a rare glimmer of light to its campaign by also advancing in the cup competition just before Christmas thanks to a 4-0 win over fifth-tier Drancy.

It’s been almost a decade since Nantes last managed to clinch all three points at the Decathlon Arena, and the club will be hard-pressed to end that streak on Saturday.
