The Ligue 1 title race is already looking dangerously close to a one-horse race, but Lyon will look to keep applying pressure on leader Paris Saint-Germain with a win over Montpellier on Saturday. Les Gones play host to La Paillade with a gap of 16 points currently separating the two teams, with Lyon entering Week 16 sat fifth in the standings while Montpellier is marooned in last place. A new year brings new possibilities, however, and Jean-Louis Gasset will pray that means a turnaround for his side, who return to action four points from safety and in desperate need of a first win since November.

Almost two months removed from that most recent victory, Montpellier makes the trip north still chasing down a first away point of this league campaign, never mind a win.

La Paillade has been nothing short of disastrous on its travels so far this term, and it’s not surprising no team has scored fewer goals than them on the road in Ligue 1 (three).

Lyon has been a relatively reliable host in contrast to that, losing just one of its seven games at the Groupama so far this term.

It’s been almost one month since Lyon’s mean streak was ended by Ligue 1 leader Paris Saint-Germain, which dampened any hopes of Les Gones making a surprise run into the title chat:

It will take the team grasping every chance at points coming its way if Lyon is to maintain even the faintest hope it could eventually upset PSG and leapfrog the Ligue 1 pace-setter into first place.

Alexandre Lacazette in particular will be hoping to have an impact in Saturday’s clash after netting four the last time Lyon hosted Montpellier in May 2023.

Elye Wahi returned the favor with four of his own for Montpellier in a 5-4 defeat that day, though Gasset’s side will need a new hero if it’s to repeat the feat.
