Before things get underway for The Masters at Augusta this week, the Par 3 contest takes center stage on Wednesday.
The 2024 Masters tournament is just a day away, but there’s still one event left before the field truly gets underway on Thursday. Wednesday afternoon at Augusta National, players will be joined by their families for the annual Par 3 Contest. Held on a separate Par 3 course on the northeast corner of the grounds, this one-day, nine-hole event often serves as a chance for players to unwind before four high stress days of golf. They’ll often have family members caddy for them or even occasionally step in for shots around the green. Still, score is kept and a winner is declared at the end of the day.

Last year, American Tom Hoge won the event, shooting six-under-par. Other recent winners include Mackenzie Hughes and Mike Weir (tied) in 2022, Matt Wallace in 2019, Tom Watson in 2019, and Jimmy Walker in 2016.
No winner of the Par 3 Contest has ever gone on to win The Masters in the same year (although 12 players have won both at some point in their careers, with Weir joining that list two years ago after winning The Masters in 2003). 1990 Par 3 winner Raymond Floyd came the closest, losing the tournament in a sudden-death playoff that year. Four of the last five Par 3 Contest winners did not make the cut, while Hughes finished tied for 50th in 2022.
