Defending champion Austin Eckroat leads the field into the Cognizant Classic at Florida’s PGA National. Watch free on Fubo.

The PGA Tour’s Florida swing tees off on Thursday at the Champions Course of PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens with the opening round of the Cognizant Classic. Austin Eckroat had his break-through first career PGA Tour victory in last year’s tournament before going on to win the World Wide Technology Championship in November. The tournament has had many names and homes since it was launched in 1972, landing at PGA National since 2007. The tournament is also the last opportunity for players to get into the field for next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, the next Signature Event of the season.

Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion, is playing at PGA National for the first time since 2009 and, after not playing at last week’s Mexico Open, will need a strong tournament β€” likely a top-five finish at worst β€” to get a spot in the Aon Swing 5 to tee it up at Bay Hill. Spieth battled a wrist injury last season and finished 67th in the FedExCup standings, outside the top 50 that automatically qualified for this season’s Signature Events.

Eckroat, meanwhile, is off to a rough start in 2025, missing the cut in four of his six starts with his best finish a tie for 13th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am earlier this month. Nine former winners are in the field. The group includes Chris Kirk (2023), Sepp Straka (2022), Sungjae Im (2020), Keith Mitchell (2019), Rickie Fowler (2017), Russell Henley (2014), Camilo Villegas (2010), Luke Donald (2006) and Matt Kuchar (2002).

Players are competing for a piece of the tournament-record $9.2 million purse, with the winner earning $1.656 million and 500 FedExCup points. Straka is the top player on the FedExCup points list in the field. He currently is third with 854 points through eight events and won The American Express in California last month.
