Defending champion Davis Thompson takes a 1-shot lead into the final round at TPC Deere Run on Sunday

Davis Thompson birdied the 18th hole to finish his third round to break out of a five-way tie and claim the outright lead entering Sunday’s final round at the John Deere Classic. Thompson, the defending champion, shot a four-under-par 67 on a tough day for scoring at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, to take the lead from Brian Campbell, Max Homa, Emiliano Grillo and David Lipsky, all of whom carded 68s on Saturday. Thompson is looking to become the first repeat winner at the event since Steve Stricker won three straight from 2009-11.

Thompson is also playing for a spot in The Open Championship, with a win moving him to the top of the alternate list. But the course played much more difficult on Saturday. After 28 scores of 65 or lower in the first two rounds, no one shot better than 66 in the third round, with Kurt Kitayama, Patrick Fishburn and Philip Knowles sharing the low score of the day.

Kitayama moved into a tie for sixth with his 66, getting to within three of the lead along with Austin Eckroat, Seamus Power and Camilo Villegas, while Matt Kuchar, Chris Gotterup, amateur Jackson Koivun, Cameron Champ and Kevin Roy tied for 10th at four shots back.

The winner gets $1.512 million of the tournament-record $8.4 million purse as well as 500 FedExCup points, with the playoffs opening next month. Six events remain before the postseason.
