Taylor Pendrith sizzles in his return to competition with a 1st-round 61 at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas

After a two-week break following the Presidents Cup, Taylor Pendrith returned to competition on Thursday with a bang, dropping five birdies on each side of the course en route to a 10-under-par 61 and a three-shot lead at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. It’s a logjam of players behind Pendrith, with 11 players carding 64s in Thursday’s first round at TPC Summerlin. Among them were Bud Cauley, Ben Silverman, Rico Hoey, J.T. Poston, Harry Hall, Matti Schmid, Mark Hubbard, Doug Ghim, Joseph Bramlett and Garrick Higgo.

Play was suspended due to darkness with eight players remaining on the course. Those players will finish Round 1 on Friday before the second round tees off. Players are competing for the $1.26 million winner’s share of the $7 million purse and the 500 FedExCup points for a first-place finish.

This week’s tournament marks the fourth of eight events on the FedExCup Fall schedule, where players have a chance to earn exemptions to Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational signature attempts early next season if they finish between 51st and 60th on the FedExCup points list. Players in the top 125 earn full PGA Tour cards for the 2025 season.

Two-time defending champion Tom Kim opened with a two-under-par 69 and is in a tie for 62nd place, eight shots back of Pendrith. The tournament was founded in 1983 and Kim came in trying to tie Jim Furyk’s record of three victories at the tournament. Besides Kim, Kevin Na and Martin Laird are the only other multiple-time winners.
