The PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing tees off on Thursday in La Quinta, California, where a field of 156 players will play three different courses at the Coachella Valley resort over the first three days of The American Express. After a 54-hole cut on Saturday, the final round will be played on the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West. The other courses in the rotation for Thursday through Saturday include the La Quinta Country Club and the Nicklaus Tournament Course. also at PGA West.

Dunlap held off Christian Bezuidenhout by one stroke last year, setting a new tournament record of 29-under-par 259 in the process. The event dates to 1960, when the Palm Springs Desert Classic was added to the PGA Tour schedule, and has been played annually under a variety of sponsor names since.
Two major champions are in the field this week in Justin Thomas and Wyndham Clark while 17-year-old Blades Brown makes his professional debut this week after turning pro in December. Arnold Palmer won the event a record five times, while several players have two wins there, including Billy Casper, Johnny Miller, John Mahaffey, Corey Pavin, John Cook, Phil Mickelson, Bill Haas, Hudson Swafford and Jon Rahm.
The winner will claim $1.53 million from the tournament’s $8.5 million purse, along with 500 FedExCup points. Dunlap’s victory last year marked the first by an amateur at a PGA Tour event since Mickelson in 1991. Dunlap turned pro the following week and picked up his first professional victory at the Barracuda Championship in July.
