Nick Taylor looks to close a three-shot deficit to claim back-to-back titles

After a blistering opening-round 62 on Thursday, Canadian Nick Taylor appeared poised to claim his second consecutive Sony Open title. However, an even-par 70 to open the weekend left the defending champion three shots off the lead heading into Sunday’s final round at Waialae Country Club. Davis Riley holds a two-shot lead after 54 holes following a third-round 67, as he aims for his third PGA Tour victory after making the cut in this event for the first time since 2022. Former Sony Open champions Hideki Matsuyama and Si Woo Kim are also in the mix, entering Sunday’s final round within five shots of the lead.

Last year, Nick Taylor shot a final-round 65, including a chip-in eagle on the 72nd hole to force a playoff before beating Nico Echavarria with a birdie on the second extra hole to take home his fifth career PGA Tour victory. Taylor, a native of Winnipeg, was a two-time All-American and was the Pac-10 Golfer of the Year while at the University of Washington, and made headlines in 2009 posting the lowest amateur round ever in the U.S. Open with a second round 65 before posting a 36th place finish, winning the low amateur.

Veteran Kevin Roy, who like Taylor carded an opening-round 62, is two shots off the lead as he hunts for his first career PGA Tour victory. Roy posted three Top 10 finishes in 2005 but has never finished better than T-45th in this event.
