No. 6 seed Orono takes on third-seeded Northfield in a Minnesota Class A quarterfinal on Wednesday afternoon in high school hockey.

Northfield (22-4-2) enters the Minnesota Class A hockey tournament as the No. 3 seed, reaching state for the second straight season and the third time overall. On Wednesday afternoon, the Raiders face-off with sixth-seeded Orono (15-10-3). The Spartans are in their third consecutive state tournament and were the champions in 2018. Northfield didn’t allow a goal while sweeping to the Section 1A title while Orono advanced to state as the No. 3 seed in Section 2A, knocking off both the second and first seeds en route to the championship.

The Raiders finished their run through the sectional tournament on Feb. 26 with a 2-0 victory over Rochester Lourdes at the Rochester Recreation Center. Wade Gilbertson got them on the board just 2:24 into the game and Christian Whiteman added an insurance marker with seven seconds left. Max Frank needed only 15 saves to get the shutout.

Jackson Knight’s second goal of the game at 7:45 of the third period gave the Spartans their first lead in their 4-3 win over Minneapolis on Feb. 26 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. Miller Williams potted an empty-netter with 49 seconds left before Minneapolis scored with 30 seconds remaining.

Will Chasin leads Northfield with 30 goals and 59 points while Ben Geiger has 20 goals on the season. Frank is 16-4-1 in 26 games with a 1.96 goals-against average and .904 save percentage. For Orono, Knight has team-highs of 33 goals and 62 points, with Trey Landa scoring 21 goals this season. Evan Schmidt is 11-10-3 in 26 games, posting a 2.73 goals-against average and .907 save percentage with one shutout.

The winner of Wednesday’s game advances to Friday’s semifinals against the winner of the Mahtomedi vs. St. Cloud Cathedral quarterfinal, played earlier in the day.
