Top-seeded Hibbing/Chisholm goes after its first Minnesota Class A title-game appearance against East Grand Forks.

Hibbing/Chisholm (20-9-0), the top seed at the Minnesota Class A hockey tournament, can reach the championship game for the first time in program history with a win over No. 4 seed East Grand Forks (14-13-2) at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Friday afternoon. The Bluejackets are in the state tournament for just the second time since the schools entered a co-op program in 2005. The Green Wave are back at state for the first time since 2021 and their 14th appearance overall, winning back-to-back state titles in 2014-15. Hibbing won a state championship in 1973.

Tate Swanson’s first of two goals came just 1:15 into the game on Wednesday as Hibbing/Chisholm overwhelmed eighth-seeded Luverne 7-0. Rex Walli and Gavin Lamphere combined to stop 21 shots in the shutout, with Tate Swanson adding an assist while Cole Swanson had a goal and two helpers. Hunter Gustavsson, Jace Kampsula, Ben Galli and Jackson Strukel also lit the lamp.

East Grand Forks also comes off a shutout win in the quarterfinals, blanking No. 5 seed Northern Lakes 3-0 on Wednesday. Jace Van Epps got the Green Wave on the board with 3:26 left in the second period and Jace Panzer provided an insurance goal 3:42 into the third. Tucker Lovejoy’s empty-netter with 1:36 to go sealed it. Noah Schindele made 24 saves while Lovejoy also had an assist. Cole Schmiedeberg had a pair of helpers.

Tate Swanson leads the Bluejackets with 21 goals and 62 points, with Kampsula and Cole Swanson each scoring 19. Walli is 14-5-0 in 27 games with a 2.19 goals-against average and .901 save percentage. Lovejoy’s 18 goals lead East Grand Forks while Hunter Varnsson tops the team with 30 points on eight goals and 22 assists. Schindele has a 13-10-2 record in 27 appearances with a 2.59 GAA and .887 save percentage.
