Grand Forks Central and Bismarck Century/West Fargo will battle it out to claim the first spot in the NDHSAA Tournament Championship.

The stage is set for the first semifinal in the NDHSAA Boys Hockey Tournament and on Friday night, Grand Forks Central and West Fargo will meet for a chance to win for a state title on Saturday. The Grand Forks Central Knights claimed the first spot in the semifinals with a commanding 12-3 victory over Bottineau-Rugby on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Senior Ryder Burris was a key component for the Knights in Thursday’s win after watching from the sidelines last season. Early in the season, Burris broke his leg, missing the remainder of the season. This year? Burris scored a hat trick in his second multi-goal game to propel his team to victory. The win improved the Knights’ record to 20-5 on the season and extended its win streak to eight games. Another two wins will give the team its fourth state title in the last decade.

The West Fargo Packers have been the talk of the town this season with the team appearing in the state tournament for the first time since 2016. Behind junior Bryce Mattern, the team finished third in the Eastern Dakota Conference. Mattern came into the tournament with 52 goals and 37 assists after only earning 50 total points in his sophomore season with the Packers. West Fargo beat Bismarck Century 5-4 in overtime to earn a spot in the semifinal. Mattern came through again for the Packers, finishing the game with his second hat trick of the season and providing an assist.

Grand Forks Central and West Fargo met twice this season and the Knights won both games, winning 9-2 in the first meeting and 7-4 in the second. The Packers will look to avenge those losses on Friday, however, and earn a spot in the finals. Tune in to see which team continues its journey to a state title.
