In the second semifinal from the Allentown regional of the 2025 NCAA Hockey tournament, third overall seed Maine takes on Penn State on Friday.

Maine (24-7-6, 13-5-6 Hockey East) just came off of an impressive run in the 2025 Hockey East tournament, and will look to continue that run when tournament action continues on Friday night. The third overall seed in this year’s Frozen Four, the Black Bears are at the top of the Allentown regional at the PPL Center, facing a local team and another surprise tournament team in Penn State (20-13-4, 9-11-4 Big Ten). The winner of this game will face the winner of the UConn and Quinnipiac matchup, which will precede this game on Friday.

After being picked fourth in the Hockey East preseason poll, the Black Bears finished in second place in the conference in the regular season. They then swept their way through the conference tournament beating UMass Lowell, Northeastern, and finally UConn to claim their fifth Hockey East championship.

Now, Maine is back in the tournament for the second year in a row after not making it for the previous 11 years. Last year the Black Bears were one-and-done, losing to Cornell in their regional semifinal.

The Nittany Lions finished just under .500 in the competitive Big Ten this year, then upset Michigan with a sweep in the best-of-three quarterfinals round of the Big Ten Tournament. They then lost to Ohio State in the semifinals.

This will be the second tournament appearance in three years for Penn State. They won their regional semifinal before losing in the regional final in 2023.
