The first round of the 2025 NCAA Hockey tournament includes an in-state rivalry matchup with UConn taking on Quinnipiac in an Allentown regional semifinal.

The Allentown regional of the 2025 NCAA Hockey tournament begins on Friday evening. In the first matchup, two in-state rivals square off as UConn (22-11-4, 12-8-4 Hockey East) takes on Quinnipiac (24-11-2, 16-5-1 ECAC) at the PPL Center. These teams met once in the regular season, back in mid-January as a part of the CT Ice tournament. UConn won that game 2-1, with junior forward Ryan Tattle scoring both goals for the Huskies. That included the game-winning goal, which game with less than a second to play in regulation.

UConn enters the tournament after finishing with the fourth best record in the Hockey East in the regular season. The Huskies made it to the conference championship game in the tournament but lost 5-2 to Maine in the final. Now, the Huskies are appearing in the Frozen Four tournament for the first time in program history.

Quinnipiac finished the regular season with the best record in the ECAC. However, the Bobcats lost to eventual champion Cornell in the semifinal round.

This will be the Bobcats’ fifth trip to the national tournament in a row. Two years ago the Bobcats captured their first national championship in program history. In their attempt to repeat last year they won the regional semifinal, but then lost in the regional final.

The winner of this game will go on to the regional final round on Sunday. They’ll face the winner of the matchup between Maine and Penn State, which will be played later in the day on Friday.
