Providence will look to move up in the Hockey East standings with a win against UConn on Friday night in men’s college hockey.

The No. 9 UConn Huskies will travel on Friday to take on the No. 7 Providence Friars at Schneider Arena for the first of two games in as many days. The Friars come into Friday night’s contest with a Hockey East record of 5-5-3 and an overall record of 15-6-3 for a spot in seventh place in the league table. The team will look to bounce back from a tough 1-0 loss against UMass Lowell on Saturday. The game was scoreless until the final 11 seconds of play when Pierson Brandon was able to sneak the puck past Zachary Borgiel in net. Borgiel made a total of 24 saves on the night for the Friars, but the one shot that made it past ended up being the difference between adding three points to the team’s tally.

The Huskies bring a two game win streak into Friday night’s contest after beating No. 15 Quinnipiac 2-1 last Friday followed by a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday to win the CT Ice Championship. The wins improved the Huskies’ overall record to 14-8-2 and their conference record to 7-6-2 for a spot in fourth place in the Hockey East standings. Against Sacred Heart, the team came out ready to play, scoring early after Filip Sitar finished the rebound off of Tristan Fraser’s shot. Tyler Muszelik saw a total of 23 shots in between the pipes, but was able to turn away each of them to earn his first shutout of the season.

UConn and Providence have met a total of 24 times in their history and the Friars lead the all-time series with a record of 14-6-4. The teams met twice last year and split the games with the Friars winning the first 5-0 and the Huskies taking the second in a narrow 2-1 victory.
