No. 12 Arizona State comes into the weekend at the top of the NCHC standings, but faces a big test at home against No. 5 Denver.

Heading into the weekend, No. 12 Arizona State (16-9-1, 11-5-0 NCHC) sits at the top of the standings in the very competitive NCHC conference. The Sun Devils have gotten to that point after winning six of their last eight conference games, going back to the New Year’s break. However this week they’ll face their toughest test of the stretch and toughest test remaining this season when No. 5 Denver (19-6-1, 8-5-1 NCHC) pays a visit to Mullett Arena in Tempe with the Pioneers trying to climb up the standings themselves.

Arizona State was on the road last weekend and played a couple of very well-rounded games against Miami (OH). The Sun Devils won the two games by scores of 7-1 and 4-1. Senior goalie Luke Pavicich made a combined 30 saves between the two games.

Denver had its own offensive outburst in its last game too. The Pioneers beat Omaha 11-2 on Saturday, after playing to a 3-3 tie with a shootout loss on Friday. In that 11 goal game, junior forward Rieger Lorenz had four points with two goals and two assists.

This is the second weekend series of the year between Denver and Arizona State. They first met in Denver for a pair of games in late November. Denver came into that weekend ranked No. 1 in the country, but it was the Sun Devils picking up the sweep on the road with wins of 5-2 and 3-2.
