Denver takes on top-seeded Western Michigan on Saturday night in the Championship game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff.
The Western Michigan Broncos hit the ice on Saturday night to take on the Denver Pioneers in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship. The Broncos who came in as the top seed used a three-goal third period to take down North Dakota on Friday night in the semifinals. Alex Bump opened the scoring for the Broncos with a first period goal. The Fighting Haws tied it late in the period and the game would remain tied until the third period. Grant Sluynsky broke that tie at 7:23 of the third and it set up a furious last two minutes of the game. Liro Hakkarainen got an empty-net goal at 18:06. North Dakota got back to within won just a minute later, but Samuel Sjolund made sure they wouldn’t complete the comeback with another empty-net goal at 19:35. The win pushed the Broncos record to 29-7-1 on the season. They now get a Pioneers team that they split two games with earlier this season. They won the first 3-2, but lost the finale 3-2 in overtime.
