No. 2 Minnesota will try to lock up the top spot in the Big Ten Conference’s regular season standings this weekend against No. 15 Penn State. The first of the two games between these two teams this weekend is on Friday night.

It’s the final week of the regular season for No. 2 Minnesota (23-7-4, 14-5-3 Big Ten), The Golden Gophers enter the weekend sitting in first place in the conference standings. Finishing in that spot would not only give the Gophers their third season in four years finishing in first place at the end of the regular season, it would also guarantee the top seed in the Big Ten tournament when it begins next week. Minnesota hasn’t locked that up though with No. 3 Michigan State just two standings points back and No. 8 Ohio State just two points behind that. Still Minnesota controls its own destiny, and will look to lock up the top seed this weekend in a series on the road against Penn State (17-11-4, 8-10-4 Big Ten) at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park starting on Friday night.

Minnesota is in this position after sweeping Ohio State last weekend. The Gophers hosted the Buckeyes and won the games by scores of 4-1 and 6-3. Graduate goalie Liam Souliere made 41 saves between the two games.

Meanwhile, Penn State is still trying to grab one of the top four spots in the conference tournament. The Nittany Lions come into the weekend in fifth place, which is two points back of No. 11 Michigan (which also has a game in hand on Penn State).
