No. 2 seed Arizona State takes on 3rd-seeded Denver in an NCHC semifinal in St. Paul on Friday evening

No. 11 Arizona State (21-13-2) secured the second seed for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament in its first season in the league and on Friday night takes on No. 6 Denver (28-10-1), the defending national champion and No. 3 seed, in a Frozen Faceoff semifinal at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Sun Devils are looking for their first NCAA tournament bid since 2019 while the Pioneers have played in the last three NCAA tourneys, winning it all in both 2022 and 2024.

Arizona State came back from a 3-0 deficit and eliminated No. 7 seed Minnesota Duluth when Ryan Kirwan’s goal 6:08 into overtime lifted the Sun Devils to a 6-5 victory and a 2-0 quarterfinal sweep on Saturday. Artem Shlaine scored twice and Kirwan added two assists. Kirwan leads the team with 25 goals and shares the team lead of 38 points with Lukas Sillinger. Like Pavicich is 13-8-0 in net with a 2.61 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.

Denver completed a comeback from a Game 1 loss in the quarterfinals, knocking out sixth-seeded Colorado College with a 9-2 victory on Sunday. Carter King scored twice with Cale Ashcroft and Jack Devine each posted three assists. Sam Harris leads the team with 21 goals while King has potted 20, with Devine posting a team-best 54 points. Matt Davis is 26-8-1 with a 2.09 GAA and .920 save percentage.

The Sun Devils won three of four meetings with the Pioneers this season, winning 3-2 and 5-2 in Denver on Nov. 22-23 before the teams split overtime decisions in Tempe, with Denver winning 5-4 on Feb. 7 before Arizona State came back with a 6-5 victory on Feb. 8. Greg Powers is 155-161-26 in his 15th season at ASU while David Carle has a 176-72-17 mark in his seventh season behind the Pioneers bench. The winner faces either No. 4 seed North Dakota or top-seeded Western Michigan in Saturday night’s championship game.
