No. 16 UMass takes on Vermont in the opening round of the 2025 Hockey East Tournament on Wednesday night.

The 2025 Hockey East Tournament gets underway Wednesday night with a trio of games. That includes a matchup between No. 16 UMass (19-12-5, 10-9-5) and Vermont (11-20-2, 6-16-2) at the Mullins Center. UMass comes into this game as the sixth seed – the highest seed playing in the first round. Vermont is the 11th seed in this year’s tournament and is trying to become the first 11th seed in the conference to win a game in the tournament since the Catamounts last did so in 2023.

If UMass wins this game, the Minutemen would play third-seed No. 8 Boston University in the quarterfinals this weekend. If Vermont pulls off the upset, the Catamounts would face top seeded Boston College.

While Vermont is the underdog in this matchup in terms of seed, the Catamounts had the Minutemen’s number this season. Vermont won all three head-to-head matchups with UMass. That includes a 4-3 shootout win and 4-0 shutout win in Burlington in early November, and then a 3-2 win in Amherst later that month.

The Minutemen come into the tournament unbeaten in regulation in their last six games, dating back to mid-February. In their most recent action last weekend they beat No. 5 Maine, 5-1, in regulation then lost in a shootout 3-2.

Vermont played split games in the final weekend of the regular season, hosting UConn on Thursday and No. 10 Boston University on Saturday. The Catamounts lost both of those games, 4-1 to UConn and 6-1 to Boston University.
