Northeastern has made quite the run to TD Garden, and is on an improbable path to the championship game. The Huskies are the ninth seed in the tournament, and upset eighth seed Merrimack on the road in the first round in a two overtime game, then last weekend knocked off top seed and then-top ranked nationally Boston College. With a win on Thursday, the Huskies would be the lowest seeded team ever to reach the championship game (the Hockey East has played a conference tournament since 1985). They’re already the first nine seed to make the semifinal round in tournament history.
Maine is trying to get back to the championship for the first time since 2012. After a first round bye, the Black Bears beat UMass Lowell 7-1 in their quarterfinal matchup last week.
These teams played three times during the regular season. Maine won all three matchups – two in regulation and one in a shootout.
