For the first and potentially only time this year in the 2024 IIHF World Championship host country Czechia (4-1) takes on Great Britain (0-4). So far through five matches, Czechia has enjoyed being the host country rallying behind friendly crowds to win four of its first five matches including an overtime win. They head into this match against Great Britain who have struggled to compete and who are on the brink of relegation if it cannot come away with at least one win to keep pace with the other teams in Group A. Right now Great Britain has zero points with three matches left in group play starting today to try and avoid relegation.

In their first four matches Great Britain has struggled to find the net with only five goals scored, by far the lowest in the tournament. They have also allowed 19 goals to give the team a negative 14 goal differential, again the worst in the tournament. The one positive is after today, the final two matches for Great Britain on the schedule are against two teams with just one and at risk for relegation as well.
For Czechia, it has been one of the best teams overall in the tournament. They are on pace to make it to the quarterfinals where four teams from each group advance to play for medals in the playoffs. They have 19 goals scored and nine allowed for a 12-plus goal differential good for third in the group.
After this match Czechia has only one match left in group play against Canada, which could serve as a second-place game for Group A. Ending group play strong could position Czechia, the host country, with a top three seed in the playoffs and a strong path to earning a medal this year.
