    Winless Switzerland gets a rematch with No. 4 seed Finland to open the quarterfinals at the IIHF Women’s World Championships on Thursday.

    The bottom two teams from Group A meet in a quarterfinal on Thursday at the IIHF Women’s World Championships in Utica, New York. Switzerland (0-4-0), the fifth seed for the knockout round, takes on No. 4 seed Finland (1-3-0) in a rematch from Group A play. The quarterfinals represent an important stage in the tournament. The four winners are assured a spot in Group A at the 2025 worlds in České Budějovice, Czechia, and the automatic berth in the knockout stage that comes with that status. The quarterfinal losers enter into the fifth through eighth place semifinals to fill the remaining spot in Group A next year.

    Finland’s lone win in the group stage came on Monday when it beat the Swiss 5-2. Elisa Holopainen and Petra Nieminen scored two goals each for the Finns in Group A play, while captain Jenni Hiirikoski led the club with five points (one goal and four assists). Sanni Ahola, who plays at St. Cloud State, was 1-2-0 in net with a .902 save percentage and 2.70 goals-against average.

    Captain Lara Stalder scored two of Switzerland’s three goals in the group stage as it was outscored 18-3 in its four losses. Andrea Brändli faced 131 shots in her three starts, stopping them at a .924 rate while posting a 3.40 GAA.

    Finland has won 14 medals at the world championships, topped by a silver in 2019 — the only time the U.S. and Canada did not meet for the gold medal. Switzerland’s only medal at the worlds came in 2012 when it took the bronze.
