Group B play from the IIHF World Championship opens with a gold medal rematch between Czechia and Switzerland on Friday.

The last time Czechia and Switzerland faced off, it was for the gold medal at the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Prague, Czechia. On Friday, the sides drop the puck again in the opener of Group B play at the 2025 edition of the IIHF Worlds at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Denmark. The event is being co-hosted by Herning and Stockholm, Sweden, which will be the site for Group A play in the 16-team event. Czechia comes in as defending champion, winning its seventh gold medal in 2024 and its first since 2010. The Swiss have taken silver four times.

Czechia’s roster is significantly different from the 2024 version, starting with goalie Lukáš Dostál not being with the squad. Instead, Karel Vejmelka of the Utah Mammoth will be leaned upon after posting a 2.58 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 2024-25. A big plus for Czechia is the availability of Boston Bruins winger David Pastrňák and Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Nečas. Captain Roman Červenka, 39, is the reigning IIHF Male Player of the Year.

Switzerland brings offensive firepower in New Jersey Devils teammates Nico Hischier and Timo Meier, with a third Devil — defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler — also on the club to man the blue line with Janis Moser of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Hischier will captain the club, but the Swiss still have 41-year-old leader Andres Ambuhl, who is retiring after this season and has a record 141 games played at the Worlds, and 37-year-old goalie Leonardo Genoni.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, with Group B also including the United States, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Kazakhstan and Hungary, which earned promotion from Division I in 2024. Group A has Canada, Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, Austria, France and Slovenia, the other national team promoted last year.

Regional restrictions may apply.
