    Germany comes off a dominant win over Denmark as it faces off with Japan in Group B play at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships.

    Germany (1-0-0, 3 points) tries to keep pace with Sweden in Group B at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships on Saturday when it takes on Japan (0-0-1, 1 point) at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York. Germany placed seventh at the 2023 tournament in Brampton, Ontario, to retain its spot in the top division while Japan finished sixth. The top three of the five teams in Group B advance to the knockout round and remain in the top division while the bottom two finishers face relegation to Division 1A next year. The Germans finished fourth in 2017 for their best finish at the worlds while Japan’s fifth-place finish in 2022 is its high-water mark.

    Germany broke open a close game on Thursday with three third-period goals in its 5-1 victory over Denmark. The Germans led 2-0 after two periods, opening the scoring with 14 seconds left in the first on Lilli Welcke’s goal. Laura Kluge, Ronja Hark, Julie Schiefer and Emily Nix also scored. Sandra Abstreiter made 11 saves to get the win in net.

    Japan had 1-0 and 2-1 leads on Thursday but was blanked in a shootout and lost a 3-2 decision to newcomer China. Akane Shiga put the Japanese up 1-0 just 4:12 into the game and Makoto Ito made it a 2-1 game 3:37 into the third period. Rui Ukita’s attempt was stopped as China won the shootout 1-0.

    Japan and Germany each lost in the quarterfinals in Brampton, with the Japanese falling to Switzerland 5-1 and Germany dropping a 3-0 decision to the eventual champion, the United States.
