Brazil carry a 13-game unbeaten streak into the final and triumphed in all but one of those games, surrendering a 1-1 draw to Ecuador when Tite fielded a second-string side with top spot in Group B already secured. Argentina’s 19-game undefeated run may look more imposing, but despite going four months longer without a loss, their 12 wins (seven draws) along the way is on a par with their final foes. As fate would have it, the last time either side suffered defeat was against one another.

Brazil began their current rampage after succumbing 1-0 to Argentina in November 2019, while the Selecao delivered a 2-0 win of their own in the same fixture just four months prior. Scaloni has navigated his side along a resilient streak the likes of which haven’t been seen in some years, but Argentina’s modern record in finals is approaching curse-like levels:

La Albiceleste have won 14 Copa titles—only one fewer than all-time record-holders Uruguay—but the most recent of those was back in 1993. Brazil have won more Copa finals (five) than Argentina have lost since then (four), and now must be the time for Messi & Co. to take a stand. Scaloni’s men won four games in a row after drawing their Group A opener against Chile, though they only just advanced on penalties past Colombia in the semi-finals:

Brazil will take that as a subtle sign of their superiority considering they beat La Tricolor 2-1 in the group stage, one of only two games at this tournament in which they’ve conceded so far. While Messi has special motivation to lift this year’s crown following the death of Argentinian icon Diego Maradona last November, former teammate Neymar has his own reasons to impress:

The Paris Saint-Germain star was absent through injury for the title triumph of 2019. He now hopes to help his country win back-to-back Copas for the third time since 1997. Gabriel Jesus is the only notable absence for Saturday’s decider after he was banned for two games for a high challenge in the 1-0 quarter-final win over Chile:

As impressive as Neymar’s contributions have been, they can’t compare with the four goals and five assists Messi has recorded in his six appearances thus far at the tournament. The captain labelled goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez “a phenomenon” after he saved three penalties in their semi-final shootout with Colombia. However, Argentina will need more of their stars to step up if they’re to end Messi’s wait for major international silverware, facing a Brazil team looking to win a sixth Copa from six while hosting the competition.
