How to Watch Live CONMEBOL Qualifiers: Colombia vs. Argentina

These two heavyweights of South American soccer will meet each other on Tuesday, June 8 with Argentina keen to make up for losing ground at the top of the CONMEBOL qualification standings with last week’s draw at home to Chile. Colombia suffered a poor start to their campaign, but returned to winning ways with a 3-0 away victory over Peru. That was, however, a match against the bottom team in the CONMEBOL qualifying table and so this will be a better gauge of where Reinaldo Rueda’s team is at this moment in time. Both countries will be aiming for three points from this one. What makes this such a compelling fixture is that both teams have their flaws.

Lionel Messi found the back of the net for Argentina in last week’s home draw against Chile, but he didn’t receive much support from the rest of his team. La Albiceleste must harness their best player in a better way if they are to first qualify for the 2022 World Cup and then make their mark at the tournament.

Lionel Scaloni has settled on a 4-2-2 system to get the best out of the group of players he has at his disposal, but the problem that arose from this formation against Chile was that Argentina lacked width. Between Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Angel di Maria and Luis Ocampos, Argentina have the attacking quality to win games. It’s just about harnessing them in the right way.

Colombia needed to reboot their 2022 World Cup qualification campaign after just one win from their opening four fixtures. That run included a shock 6-1 defeat to Ecuador at the end of last year that prompted many questions of the national team and the direction it was heading in.

As already referenced, last week’s 3-0 win over Peru has put Colombia back on the right path, but they still have a lot of work ahead of them to turn around a World Cup qualification that has them slumped in seventh place, eight points off the pace being set by Brazil, after just five games.
