Gareth Southgate’s side have been fortunate to play four of their five games thus far on home soil, although it was at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico that England ran riot over Ukraine in their last outing. Saturday’s trip to Italy ultimately proved rather routine as Harry Kane scored a brace to bring his Euro 2020 goal tally up to three, accompanied by headed efforts by Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson:

After failing to score more than once in any of their group fixtures, the Three Lions have now scored six times in their two knockout fixtures and are looking more menacing in attack. Captain Kane spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about what it meant to bag the nerve-settler in their 2-0 victory over long-time rivals Germany following Raheem Sterling’s opener:

That goal broke his duck of eight European Championship games without scoring, while the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount provide a steady chain of ammunition. But for all their attacking prowess, it’s England’s defensive record that’s drawn the most attention in recent months, edging towards a national team record if they can last without leaking against Denmark:

But Kasper Hjulmand’s side have also proved a defensive juggernaut at times in their Euro 2020 quest, aside from the fact they’ve outscored England’s eight goals with 11 of their own at this tournament. Nice frontman Kasper Dolberg has powered into righteous form with three goals in his last two outings for Denmark, earning comparisons to England counterpart Kane from journalist Carsten Werge:

Right-sided left-back Joakim Maehle and wing wizard Mikkel Damsgaard have also proved vital en route to the semifinals, and caging that pair will be critical to England’s hopes of advancing. Both managers will have close to a full complement of players available at Wembley, with Christian Eriksen being the sole absentee following his cardiac arrest in his side’s opener against Finland.

Denmark were crowned champions of Europe in 1992 but will make their first semi-final appearance since then almost 30 years later, hoping to recapture that same underdog magic against a frontrunner for the title. A Wembley final opposite Italy awaits the victor of this matchup, but the focus must be on Wednesday's all-or-nothing clash for the fairytale run to continue.
