Pennant favorites face-off as the Yankees open the season on the road against the Astros on Thursday.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in six seasons, the New York Yankees turn the page to 2024 and begin the season on the road against the team that eliminated them from the postseason in 2022, as Framber Valdez makes the opening day start for the Houston Astros. Valdez went 12-11 with a 3.45 ERA for Houston last season striking out 200 batters for the first time in his career, but Thursday faces a Yankees lineup that has had its way with the 30-year-old Dominican, as Valdez is 0-1 in three career starts with a 6.75 ERA against New York.

Yankees southpaw Nestor Cortes made only 12 starts last season due to a rotator cuff strain that sidelined him for three months and was not sharp in spring training, posting a 8.10 ERA in three starts. Cortes will get the opening day nod, as Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will likely miss the first month of the season due to an elbow issue.
Veteran left fielder Juan Soto makes his Yankees debut today after being acquired in a December trade from the San Diego Padres. Soto hit 35 home runs and drove in 109 runs for the Padres last season and begins this season 17 RBIs away from 500 for his career.
New York took five of seven games against the Astros last season, sweeping them in a three-game series in September at Minute Maid Park.
