The second of two intercontinental playoff matches for berths in FIFA World Cup 2022 is set for Tuesday at Al Rayyan, Qatar, as Costa Rica takes on New Zealand. On Monday, Australia beat Peru on penalties to reach the field of 32 headed back to Qatar in November.

Costa Rica earned a spot in the intercontinental playoff with a fourth-place finish during CONCACAF qualifying. It was 7-4-3 in the competition, tied with the United States for the final automatic spot in the World Cup, but the U.S. advanced based on a better overall goal differential.
New Zealand won the Oceania Football Confederation championship with a 5-0 victory over Solomon Islands on March 30 to advance to the playoff.
Costa Rica has made five appearances at the World Cup, all since 1990. After reaching the quarterfinals in 2014, it failed to get out of the group stage four years ago in Russia.
New Zealand last reached the World Cup in 2010, drawing all three matches in group play and failing to advance. Its only other appearance was in Spain in 1982, where it was 0-3-0.
This is just the second meeting between Costa Rica and New Zealand. The Costa Ricans cruised to a 4-0 victory in a friendly, played in San José, Costa Rica, in March 2007.
