How to Watch Live 2021 NBA Draft & Preview
Cade Cunningham is the consensus No. 1 pick right there for the taking for the Detroit Pistons. Will they go with the popular pick or shock the NBA world? Find out on ESPN. GETTY IMAGES

The Houston Rockets had the best odds to get the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft back in the lottery in June but it was the Detroit Pistons who got lucky. They will be drafting first overall since 1970 when they drafted Hall of Famer Bob Lanier. They are hoping to replicate that kind of legacy instead of their recent draft history. They haven't drafted an All-Star since 2012. They happened to draft two that year in Andre Drummond and Khris Middleton. Of course neither of those two are on the Pistons now and the later just won an NBA title and is on the U.S. men's basketball team competing in the Tokyo Olympics. Could Cade Cunningham be the answer to their woes really stemming from their back-to-back Finals appearances in 2004-05?

Now it's not a 100-percent lock that the Oklahoma State star will go to the Motor City but it'd be a complete shock if he didn't. Cunningham is the consensus No. 1 pick much like he was a consensus first-team All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year in his only year as a Cowboy. The Pistons have worked out other players but that's probably a smoke screen and the organization doing their due diligence. The Pistons desperately need a proper point guard and a star that can get them out of their doldrum and the cellar of the East.

Besides checking all the boxes on offense, Cunningham has the ability to play some defense which is what really sets him apart. This guy won't take breaks and he's the centerpiece of who to build your franchise around. Many are comparing him to Luka Dončić of the Dallas Mavericks. It's going to take some time for him to score on a reliable basis like the Mavs star but the potential is there. Don't let the Pistons fool you. Cunningham will be the No. 1 pick in this draft.

Then there is the tale of two Jalens. First there is Jalen Green who was a five-star recruit but decided to go to the G-League's Ignite instead. It's interesting to think about whether he would have decided to attend college if the NCAA had allowed players to profit off of their name, image and likeness like they do now. Either way, he will be picked no later than the top three. His ability to score like no other in this draft is mouth watering for Houston who need to somehow replicate the James Harden sized void left in their organization.

Then there is Jalen Suggs who hit that now famous buzzer beater in this year's Final Four against UCLA to bring Gonzaga to the National Championship. He is being projected for the Raptors mostly because it fits the right narrative that he could replace the future hall-of-famer Kyle Lowry. Sources are speculating Lowry might end up with the Mavs and 76ers among others. It's unfair to say Suggs can simply step in Lowry's shoes but this guy is more than just a shot. He is a two-way guard that will make a definite impact anywhere he goes.

Now don't forget about Evan Mobley out of USC. There is a renaissance for the big man again after Nikola Jokic took the league by storm this year winning MVP and we all know how important Anthony Davis was to the Lakers last year in their title run. Mobley has that same upside. Those are you players that stand out from the rest of the pack in the 2021 NBA Draft.
