The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals have had very similar trajectories this season. Not even a month ago, they both looked on top of the world and it seemed they would both run away at the top of the division. Now these rivals are fighting it out to see who can get back to .500 first. Coming into this series, they both had the same record. Now in the rubber match they still have the same record at 47-48. The Cardinals dominated the first game 8-3 on Monday and the Cubs eked one out 7-6 the next day. Who will get the best of this series and start getting their season back on track?

It now looks like the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds are going to be the NL Central representatives in the playoffs though. The Cubs have just struggled too much on the road going 19-31 and have a -24 run differential overall which ranks 19th in the league. We've talked about how this club looks to be a big seller at the trade deadline with Kris Bryant and Craig Kimbrel being the biggest names swirling around the rumor mill. Javy Baez seems to be sticking around though and has been a bright spot leading the club in homers with 21.

If you're into pitching, you can't miss this matchup. Future Hall of Famer Adam Wainwright is facing off against Kyle Hendricks. Wainwright signed a one-year contract before the start of the season to resign with the Cardinals and he is earning every bit of it in what may be his final year. He has pitched two complete games already and has a 3.71 ERA. Hendricks is obviously no slouch of his own going 12-4 for the season and has a 3.65 ERA. He's the ace of this staff and the Cubs really need him to give a shot to this rotation or this season is going to be a wash.
