The tale of how the College World Series finalists got to this point couldn't be any different. The defending champs back from 2019, the Vanderbilt Commodores, are here because of a no-contest. That shouldn't take away from a great season they've been having and are still the best college baseball program in the country until proven otherwise. But they moved past NC State to advance to the World Series because of COVID-19 safety protocols. Let's go back in time though.

What TV Channel is Game 1: Mississippi State-Vanderbilt on?

The Wolfpack beat Vandy in their first matchup in a gutsy 1-0 performance with only 13 players. Vanderbilt went to the losers bracket after that game and beat Stanford by a run to get another shot at NC State. In another close game, the Commodores were able to eek out a win against NC State and they were scheduled to play the very next day but then there were more positive tests on the Wolfpack side and they were heartbreakingly eliminated from the tournament.

Regardless, Vanderbilt is here because of their pitching led by Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter son of long-time MLB pitcher Al Leiter.  Even though Leiter was the losing pitcher in that one run affair against NC State, he struck out 15. It doesn't hurt that he is the SEC Pitcher of the Year. It doesn't seem long until he follows in his dad's footsteps and makes the majors. If that wasn't enough, Rocker was the 2019 CWS Most Outstanding Player. The Mississippi State Bulldogs bats are going to need all the luck they can get.

Vanderbilt didn't make their first College World Series appearance until a decade ago but since they've got there it' been a magical run. They won it all in 2014 and had a chance to repeat in 2015 but lost to Virginia. They hope to avoid a similar fate when they face off in this all-SEC CWS Final. This is the third final to feature two SEC teams in the last decade. The last was in 2017 when the Florida Gators won their first ever title beating the LSU Tigers making their 18th CWS appearance.

While the Bulldogs are the underdogs in this series, they've earned every ounce of respect. They've had really close games in each of their three victories came by one run. They played Texas twice in this tournament beating them 2-1 in the first round and then in the semis where Texas actually won the first game handedly 8-5 but that set up the drama for Game 2 the next day. The Bulldogs walked off against the Longhorns with a single by Tanner Leggett who hadn't had a hit in more than a month. That sent the Bulldogs their first championship series since 2013 where they were the runner up to UCLA who won their first title that year. Both Vanderbilt and Mississippi State are both trying to flip the script in their own ways this year.
