How to Watch the Michigan State spring game

About the only people that were happy about Michigan State's pandemic-shortened 2020 season was possibly fans in Ann Arbor. To be fair though, the Wolverines and Spartans both finished the season with two wins. While the finish wasn't anywhere near expectations in Mel Tucker's first season at the helm, MSU's wins last year were both against high-ranked opponents against No. 13 Michigan and No. 8 Northwestern who represented the West Division in the Big 10 Championship game.

Another good note is that very few are going to place all their stock on a seven-game season. Tucker didn't leave Colorado for East Lansing after his first and only year with the Buffs after a tremendous stint as Georgia's defensive coordinator to get off to this slow of a start. It didn't help though that Michigan State lost 15 practices between March and April of last year.

The established programs with long tenured head coaches can survive that no matter how much the pandemic changes things (e.g. 2020 Alabama). But the Spartans were just starting a new regime after their legendary coach Mark Dantonio retired after the 2019 season. This 2021 season should be looked at as the proper launching point of the Mel Tucker era. That's not to say, Tucker doesn't have to hit the ground running this year.

He was 5-7 at CU and didn't make any improvements after he left for Michigan State. The spring game will be the first opportunity we get to see how much this team has made improvements. While Tucker had a proper spring game in 2019, after last year's game was cancelled, 2021 will serve as a hybrid spring game of sorts. While there will be some fans in the stands (6,000 capacity) they will be treated to a mix of practice and a scrimmage.

The Spartans have lost more than a dozen players to the transfer portal on top of those leaving for the NFL. The new recruiting class won't be participating so this lack of depth is a large factor in the new format of this year's "spring game." Expect the first half to be individual and group drills followed by an 11 on 11 scrimmage to finish out the day.

Harkening back to the draft, MSU has the third-longest streak in the country at 80 years, to have a player drafted into the pros. That will likely continue this year with all of their best prospects coming on the defensive side of the ball. In 2020, Michigan State's main problem was giving up too many points with several blowout loses. With Tucker's great defensive mind, Saturday will be the first test on how he plans to regroup this squad even with a particularly thin depth on defense. All systems are go for Sparty.
